bocca chiusa

boca fechada vídeo 2021 Raquel Kogan / Lea van Steen

What is the place of memory in history? How to determine the order of known history? Should history be celebrated or forgotten? How do we deal with the discrepancy between the facts and the truth, between verification and understanding. The question is the discrepancy between the generic and the singular, the difference between the unforgettable, the fact and recuperated memory.

Research and rules of historical documentation surrounding what occured to the Polish Jews have already been established, but what do we do with that which has escaped? How to document what goes beyond these rules?

In the face of such restlessness, the documentation of reports, memories and stories of those whom, like I, related and relate with this recent past, acquire historical relevance. The historical significance and the social impact of the memory of the witnesses and the oral stories of these crimes against humanity is undeniable. In this sense, the understanding and the possible outcome of this type of documentation has great contemporary relevance.

Besides the historical-graphical-social motivation, I involve myself in the first person in the Project “Closed Mouth”. Being that I identify with my Polish ancestors through their fragmented stories. My parents spoke of their memories and that place which was very familiar to them and which, in their familiarity, made me feel strange. Throughout life, those familiar stories began to reside in me, working a double path: first as a cutting and distancing agent (intermediate fragmented narratives, of a time and space, which, to me, were unknown); then as an affective and subjective building apparatus (the sentimental, profound, personal to them, to me and us). In this double condition and restlessness, I have decided to invite film-maker Lea van Steen to co-direct a vídeo and we traveled in search of those fragmented narratives, interviewing those who, like I, related and relate, with that which escapes the official history – each one of them relating and understanding in completely personal points of view.

bocca chuisa video 2021 Raquel Kogan / Lea van Steen

Bocca chiusa is an Italian term for singing with the mouth closed, transferring the resonance to the nasal region.

The video will be composed by passages of interviews, held in October 2017; the audio reports of 3 Polish people living in the country.

The narrations are subtitled and interspersed with current images of locations in the city of Bedzin, where the interviews took place. As they are images silenced by time, that is count in whispers, they are accompanied by a soundtrack hummed in bocca chiusa. Speech and song intertwine, unveiling the impact on people through the recent history of relatives, co-workers or strangers.

Stories and memories of three Pollacks living in Poland were registered and recorded. In these interviews, we sought to rescue that which had escaped official history, investigate how the events of terror and the linking or unlinking of the relatve memory of said events impacted and reflected in the transformatiion of the three Polish lives we interviewed and the community in which they live. These interviews are only heard with the excerpts spoken by the interviewees. We don't know the identity of the one who tells us the facts.

Making use of a poetic narrative, the video aims to record and problematize forgotten accounts, silent in personal or historical memory. In the video bocca chuisa what we hear cannot be seen, only heard and what we see cannot be heard, only seen.
