Inscriptions/Written at the Chapel

The fluid and jelly matter is poured into a huge wooden mold, where 30 wicks are stretched, so when the work is placed in an upward position, they will be aligned vertically, allowing them to be lit on different heights. Slowly, the viscous paraffin wax starts to cool down until it is totally solidified. When this process is over, the “ chassis” for the painting is ready.even so, it will be kept horizontally inside this box while the painting is being made. The paraffin wax, more than just a mere base becomes part of the painting, and the painting would not be what it is without the fixed density carried by it. As a result, this painting when raised at the chapel, will be seen as thick pictographic wall that shall not embodied only the translucent of the wax, but the backside flames that lit, will consume it like a flame predestinated to extinction. Completely lit, the painting will also reflect on the opacity of the darkened walls of mud of this building, which may have not ever been a chapel, emphasizing the half lit indefinition brought by the flickering luminescence of Raquel Kogan’s installation.

The pictorial workmanship that organizes itself as a graphic texture starts to juxtapose itself by translucent layers intermingled by obsessive small incisions inscriptions-written drawings that add destroying and doing so constructing, intermixed by tissue paper pasting worked beforehand with same tenacity. They are pictograms, numbers, letters of the alphabet, words, small signs taken from their inherent meanings, more a scribble and a drawing than a readable writing, more an automatic writing than a text, more a palimpsest than handwriting. The diffused light of the matter does not work the decodification miracle of giving meaning to this writing that because of the inscribed and the gather of grooves, dents, patches, additions, interferences, graphite, numbers, letters, calligraphy, printed symbols, on an intense tone parsimony of multitude of grays becomes, on a flat surface, a linked writing, though indecipherable. Writing that will be real and concrete as a pictorial object, as an installation.

The proliferation of the graphisms replaces the handwritten annotation, written down between lines, on the margins, on the overlaps. As a text, it creates another comprehension that goes beyond the ordering of the printed signs. The ambiguity lays on the fact that a sign that should be helpful to decipher the writing only unfolds while the comprehension creates its own pictorial matter that through the obsessive beckon, impel from which flows out an epidemic sensoriallity, like the one found, for instance, in the tactile desire of Peter Greenway’s Pillow Book.

These pictograms also remind the small signs of Klee and Miró, the obsessivity of Pollock’s gestures, the allusive writing of Cy Tombly, the calligrams of the “pre-texts” of Mira Schendel. Whatever is the path trodden by Raquel Kogan it is resultant of an independent reflexive process, where outstands a tactile linear graphic texture, where pictographic inscriptions embodies the previous one and so on. In this texture what was visible became invisible or the opposite the invisible may become visible, since the previous writings can suddenly reappear through the action, of an engraver’s chisel, the gouge or pirographer.

Protected by the derangement of defaults and additions from the impenetrable memory doomed to be self consumed, all this obscure writing, which immerse in a senseless cacophony seems to come from some book of the Babel Library of Jorge Luis Borges. But it is also translate as the affirmation of the matter and light on plan surface, as an object and installation and above all as a painting.
